Birds under your solar panels: when is proofing smart?

The space under pitched panels is an ideal nesting spot for a pigeon. Why that hits your yield, and what proofing costs.

The space between pitched panels and the roof tiles is exactly what a pigeon or gull is looking for: dry, sheltered and pleasantly warm. One nesting pair you first hear as scratching above your bedroom: then you see it on the panels themselves. Droppings on the glass act as localised shade and cost yield directly, and nesting material dragged in under the panels can end up against the cabling.

Bird proofing closes that space with mesh or plastic strips along the edges of the panel array, without blocking the ventilation underneath: the panel needs that airflow. Once installed, the problem is solved structurally: the birds move on to another roof.

Timing matters. Outside the breeding season is easiest: nests with eggs or chicks must not be disturbed, so waiting until spring when the nest is occupied means waiting until it empties again. If there is already a nest, removing it and cleaning the panels are part of the job.

Expect € 195 to € 450 for bird proofing on an average home, including removal of existing nests and cleaning of the panels. No nuisance yet but plenty of pigeons around?
